Portuguese Sweet Bread Recipe

This is a traditional bread recipe that’s popular in Portugal for special events and holidays. It’s a sweet bread that’s often served as breakfast bread or as a dessert. You use the basic white bread cycle on your bread machine.

This style if bread was also served with savory dishes like roasts and stews as a complement to the savory nature of those types of foods.

INGREDIENTS:
 1 cup milk
 1 egg
 2 tbsp butter - room temperature
 1/3 cup white sugar
 0.75 tsp salt
 3 cups bread flour
 2.50 tsp active dry yeast
DIRECTIONS:

Add ingredients in order suggested by your manufacturer.

Select “sweet bread” setting or the “fruit and nut setting.”

    My bread machine doesn’t have Jam or Jelly setting. Is there a regular setting that can be used?

      Unfortunately, no The jam and jelly setting runs at a very high heat for a longer period of time than any other cycle on a bread machine. Sorry about that. You could try running the basic white cycle twice,, but you may end up with more of a syrup than a jelly. Adding extra pectin or gelatin might help..
