Contrary to its name, Hawaiian Style Sweet Rolls have Portuguese origins,
Fieldworkers from Portugal agreed to emigrate to Hawaii during a, grape blight in Portugal that caused massive unemployment. They brought with them a sweet bread recipe that soon became very popular in Hawaii.

For this recipe, you make the dough in the bread machine and then form into small rolls and finish in the oven. It’s a great complement to savory meat dishes, hearty soups and stews. You can also enjoy them with a pat of butter and dip them into gravy.

INGREDIENTS:
 11/3 cups milk
 4 tbsp. butter
 1 large eggs
 1/3 cup sugar
 1 tsp salt
 4 cups all-purpose flour
 2 tsps. active dry yeast
Glaze:
 1 egg
2 tbsp. milk whisked into egg
DIRECTIONS:
1

Add ingredients to bread pan in order indicated and select Dough course. Remove after kneading cycle.

2

Shape into roll shapes and glaze with egg and milk mixture.

3

Bake at 375°F. for 15 to 20 minutes or until browned.

Just clarifying- don’t let the dough cycle complete? Remove the dough from the machine after kneading, and before resting and rising?

You can do it either way but I’ve found that a get a better and more uniform rise if I take it out before the rising cycle occurs at the end of the dough cycle.

    Hi, Steve

Your Hawaiian Style Sweet Rolls recipe is fantastic! I made them as an accompaniment for a dinner shared with friends and they were a sensational hit. Bravo! To be honest, I skipped the glaze entirely and instead rolled the formed roll dough balls in melted butter and poured remaining melted butter over the top before baking. They have now been requested for Thanksgiving Dinner and will replace a long-standing family recipe for that occasion.

    Regards,

    Dennis
