This is a highly nutritious bread made with unbleached, whole wheat flour. It’s a hearty bread that goes great with any meal at any time of the day and it’s easy to make in your bread machine. Some bread machines have a dedicated whole wheat setting and obviously you should use that if you can. If not, you can select the basic white bread setting and you should get good results but the rise may not be as high. The difference between a whole wheat setting and a basic white setting is rising times. A whole wheat setting has a longer rise. That’s because whole wheat bread has less gluten than all-purpose bread or bread flour which has the most gluten. This recipe calls for the addition of something called “vital gluten.” You add it separately to compensate for the lack of gluten in whole wheat flour but it’s an option. The rise won’t be as high but the taste of the bread will still be very good.
Put all ingredients into the bread pan in the order indicated. Set the machine for a wheat bread setting or basic white bread if your machine does not have a wheat bread setting. Program for 1.5-pound loaf and medium crust. Press Start.
Remove the bread from the machine when it's done and let it cool for 10 minutes. Slice and serve.

So I thought I’d give this a whirl today because I have quite a bit of whole wheat flour in the pantry. I followed the proportions exactly except I omitted the oil, the wheat gluten and honey.
My bread machine has a whole wheat setting so there was no guess work with the timing.
It was the best ever! Personally I like simple whole wheat bread and have been paying quite a bit for it. But no more! This was even better than the brand that I’ve been buying!
Thank you for posting it.
A very easy and delicious recipe! I didn’t have the ingredient to make it rise a little more but! It truly wasn’t necessary! Thank you so much! My husband and I absolutely loved it!
Thanks, Aida. That’s always nice to hear.

Honey is NOT vegan
This recipe is fantastic! I’m a vegan and bought a bread machine before checking out recipes, which are hard to find, as I discovered after I purchased the machine. The recipe is very easy and delicious. It’s great to eat when it is hot, but there’s nothing better than toast the next day! Thank you Steve Nubie (l have never written a review before, so please know how delighted I am)
I love this bread. It’s my favorite so far as a sandwich bread. I’m a vegan as it works well in my lifestyle. Thank You
That’s great to hear, Kattie. Thanks,
Steve
