It appealed to them for a number of reasons. For one, the recipe was very simple and easy for them to make. They also enjoyed the durable and crusty nature of the bread due to the use of whole wheat flour. Finally, the bread kept very well in a backpack or an over-the-shoulder pack without getting crushed.Squaw Bread RecipeSquaw bread is the result of a curious hybrid of cultures. Immigrant Germans and Native Americans. The fundamental contribution from the German side was the use of rye flour to make their bread. The Native Americans provided the other needed ingredients including honey, raisins, sea salt and cornmeal. Other ingredients have found their way into the recipe from whole wheat flour to butter.
